It is quite impressive what Craig has done for the sport. Will be fun doing his competition.

Another disciple of the great Erik Beale, we may have to handicap you Tom if you come to the Gorge. Can't have any unfair advantage now. August looks like the prime time for an event at the Klick, just waiting on US Windsurfing to get back to me on my proposal. Don't expect an event as flash as Craig's, we're pretty low key out here in the Gorge....there will be no prize money, it will be purely for the glory, bragging rights and an attempt to set a new US record. And there will be a genuine Cornish Pastie awarded to the victor, that should be enough incentive to get you training. My wife is just cooking up a batch now....yum!

Tom,

I also wanted to mention there is $1000 to the fastest racer by October 15th.

The Best 10 Second Interval in 2008 was 32.54 knots.

This is a good way to have fun, and also make some good money.

The new "Midwest Speed Quest Economic Stimulus Package of 2009" will be announced soon. This involves even more money to top racers.

And this money will be paid on the spot. No need to wait until the end of the year.

We want to help with the recovery of the US Economy.

Stay Tuned!!!

I think all this new interest in Speed is great for Windsurfers everywhere. I hope everyone has a chance to compete in a Speed Event this year, and discover the fun and excitement of Speed Sailing.

Roo is trying to organise an event at Klickitat in the Gorge sometime around then. So it is dependant on that actually happening. Assuming it did I would try to come after that if the forecast looks promising. It is pretty easy to get to the Gorge, less so the infamous (wonder if anyone knows why?) Sioux Falls airport.

So hoping to come but no promises! Except if i do come I do promise to pass on the knowledge gained from former world speed record holder and good friend Erik Beale who taught me all I know (about speed)!

GPS Speed Sailing Rules Changes for 2009

There have been a couple of rules changes to GPS Speed Surfing for 2009.

1) Rankings will be based on "The Best Ten Second Run".

In prior years, Ranking was based on "The Average of The 5 Best Ten Second Runs".

2) The latest firmware in the GT11 and GT31 GPS units will display the most recent Ten Second Interval, as well as "The Best Ten Second Interval".

You can see your Speeds displayed on the GPS, for every run, and the Best Ten Second Interval, even before you leave the water!

It is important that Top Sailors have the latest firmware installed in their GPS units.

These speeds will be verified on the computer by the Time Keeper before posting to the appropriate Category.

The latest firmware for the GT11 is: FW_V162B1115

Download it here: [www.midwestspeedquest.com]

The latest firmware for the GT31 is: FW_V1.2B1405x

Download it here: [www.midwestspeedquest.com]

3) For 2009, the GPS Speed Surfing International Tech Group is working on an Official GPS National Ranking System.

This Ranking may involve the use of a (2) GT31 units simultaneously. This procedure would be for the very top racers, where an extremely high level of precision would be indicated.

Stay tuned for an announcement about this Dual-GPS requirement for Official GPS National Rankings.

The Midwest Speed Quest will provide single or dual GT31 GPS units to any interested racer.

Hi Guys. Great to see this forum get started. I will follow it with interest to see what is happening in the midwest.
We are in our summer now and have had a few good days so far at Sandy Point, Australia, but the normal regular strong Easterlies have deserted us so far. I guess you guys are thinking about ice sailing and I guess a few are actually braving the cold to do it. :D
How about posting some GPS Speeds on gps-icesailing.com?
